Construction
About the area
In Retail Development we look for Generalists who are enthusiastic about the planning, design, construction and development of our stores but may not have a construction degree. In addition to, Construction Managers and Quantity Surveyors who have degrees in construction or QS and are keen to become qualified and follow a specific path.
About your development
If you're a generalist you'll start off in a commercial function looking at how we negotiate contracts for new land, how we manage the construction process and how we design our buildings right down to the psychology of floor layout. You'll be one of the construction managers of the future.
As one of our construction specialists, you'll be responsible for physically delivering the projects on time and to budget, which will include site management and contractor management. It will be up to you to bring the plans to life.
About you
To be a generalist you need to be commercially minded with a strong interest in retail development - a business degree would be ideal but we'll consider all disciplines. For the specialist area we look for graduates in architecture, quantity surveying or construction. In either case you'll be dealing with a range of internal and external parties, so you need to be good at engaging with people.
Why join in?
It's a chance not only to create tangible results that will have a direct impact on our performance, but to gain in-depth insights into how major businesses work.
Property
About the area
There are two areas within Property at ASDA: the Property team identifies new areas to procure new sites, with Surveyors working out the details of the deal and whether the new sites will deliver the required rate of return; the Town Planners work with councils to get the permission to build. The programme is three years long and depending on the area you specialise in, we'll support you to become a chartered surveyor (RICS) or gain the Royal Town Planning Institute accreditation (RTPI).
About your development
Joining us as a Surveyor in the Property team, you'll spend the first month or so in-store and then work in three different areas: Estates, where you'll be involved in rent reviews and property management; Acquisitions (Food) and Acquisitions (Non-food), where you'll be involved in negotiation.
As a Town Planner you'll be involved in a variety of schemes: town centre regeneration projects; working on the relocation of an existing store or opening a new one.
Either way you'll take on a key supporting role early on, shadowing an existing Surveyor or Planner and then within 18 months to two years you'll be taking lead responsibility for small-scale projects or aspects of larger projects. After five years you could be in a senior role overseeing £multimillion schemes.
Requirements
We're ideally looking for people with a Town Planning or Surveying degree. You need to be tenacious, assertive and full of enthusiasm. And you need to like having fun!
Why join in?
The physicality of the projects you'll deliver will be really satisfying - after all the hard work, there's a store in place that will play a massive role in our success and will be there for the next 50 years.
The Retail Development scheme is based at ASDA House in Leeds.
