About the area

Our IT department is made up of about 110 people in ASDA House. It's split into many functions, but essentially there are two main areas: Projects, which provides solutions to support various areas of the business; and Service Teams, which includes the IT help desk and the commercial team. The whole department is geared towards maintaining a commercial focus, looking at how what we do will ultimately affect the customer.

About your development

Your first three months will be spent working in a store where you'll do a programme to help you understand store processes. During that time you'll also complete two projects (one on your own and one with a 2nd year and 3rd year grad) and undergo training on things like team leadership skills.

Next you'll be off to ASDA House where one of your first tasks will be to present your projects. You'll then be put into a team either in Implementation or Infrastructure where you'll stay for three months and then swap to the other team for another three. Even at this early stage, the work you'll be involved in will be adding real value to the company.

At the end of that you'll move into the team where you'll stay for the remainder of the three-year scheme. This will probably be within Business Analysis or Project Management in a team of four to six people. By the end of the scheme, the aim is for you to be a Project Manager and hopefully within your first few years you'll be leading a small team.

About you

We're more interested in the right personality than the right IT degree. These are not highly technical roles - the important thing is that you're able to develop an understanding of technical issues and then look at the commercial implications. You also need to be able to interact well with people and build relationships across the business.
